An Inspiring Wedding Moment: When the Power Went Out During the Reception

Black and white moody image of the bride and groom dancing with the dimly lit guests in the background.

The stage was set for an epic first dance backdrop; a wall of twinkly lights that would softly illuminate the Redwood trees which surrounded the actual stage of a dance floor at the Bodega Bay Secret Gardens venue. The icing on the cake was the 7 piece band known as the Lucky Devils Band.

Maurice and I had just finished setting up our OCF (off camera flash) when everything went dark. And I mean everything. The entire Bodega coast lost power when a truck took out a power line.

It was time for the first dance, and you know what happened? One of the purest, most beautiful wedding moments I’ve ever witnessed. While the lead singers belted out acapella style, the entire crowd of wedding guests all joined in … “You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” It was a powerful moment, despite lack of actual power, that brought everyone closer.

So our dreams of the twinkly light background were dimmed, but instead, thanks to our OCF, as well as the videographer’s light, we all got to experience this magical moment.

An up-close view from behind the bride as the groom holds her during their first dance.

A light shines between the bride and groom and illuminates their silhouettes.

And then the power (and twinkly, bokeh dreams) were restored (;

Lead singers of the Lucky Devils Band are singing with smiles and strings of christmas lights behind them.

A far away look of the entire dance floor shows all the different lighting and the Redwood trees above.
